BP Summer Geology Field Course

Dates: July 21-August 04, 2008

Place: Mesozoic and Plio-Pleistocene outcrops in the Northern Azerbaijan and Absheron peninsula, Geology Institute of Azerbaijan.

About the course

BP Azerbaijan will sponsor a summer field course in sedimentology and structural geology and for undergraduate and graduate students in Baku on July 21-August 04, 2008. The course will use leading global experts in sedimentology and structural geology in order to build Azerbaijan's academic capability and knowledge, and help the next generation of geoscientists to develop their skills in-country and in the future to enhance Azerbaijan's world-class industry capability. During the summer field course undergraduate and graduate students will be taught on the principals of field geology by using examples in the field. BP Azerbaijan will provide faculty from leading international universities to support the field course. The faculty include: Dr. Gary Hampson (Imperial College)

Dr. Hampson's research interests lie in the understanding of siliciclastic depositional systems and their preserved stratigraphy, and in applying this knowledge to the characterisation of rocks and fluid flow in hydrocarbon reservoirs. He has served as the Course Co-coordinator of the Petroleum Geoscience MSc course at Imperial College London since 2004. Dr. Hampson is Senior Lecturer in Sedimentary Geology at the Imperial College. He holds PhD, Sedimentology and Sequence Stratigraphy from University of Liverpool and BA, Natural Sciences (Geology), RSM, University of Cambridge.
